The hiking trip of Mermaid Pools is for you if you enjoy hiking and camping, love nature and want to see wonderful waterfalls made by nature, and want to swim inside the river and pools created by it.
But wait! This trip will not be easy for you as the trip is only for the people who are adventurous as you will not be able to find any facilities that you expect in a National park.
What is The Special About Mermaid Pools?
The Mermaid Pools are in Tahmoor and get their water from the Bargo River. This location was originally a secret treasure for locals only but by the time of fame Mermaid Pools and the Tahmoor Gorge, on the other hand, are becoming increasingly well-known. They have certainly become more popular in the previous five to ten years. That isn’t to suggest it isn’t off the beaten path. Only a few individuals come to see this gorgeous place. It’s actually a short day journey from Sydney.
Mermaid Pools is a deep swimming hole encircled by the Tahmoor Canyon’s high cliff walls. The only route into the pool is to jump off a 15-meter-high cliff. There’s also a 25-meter-high platform for true daredevils who have no fear of heights.
But as we previously said, this place is only for adventurous people, so that’s why on top of the lower cliff, a large yellow sign warns that jumping into the water is dangerous.
Trip to Mermaid Pools
Your hike will begin near the Rockford Road Bridge, in a tiny parking lot. Applying sunscreen is recommended before going out because it is quite open, especially in the summer. The path runs from under the bridge and follows from the bank which is on the right side of the creek.
You will rejoin the cliff-top route and begin the Tahmoor Gorge circle after a short rest at Mermaid Pool. There is a viewpoint along the road where you can see Mermaid Pool from far away, along with the upper river stream and waterfall and that view is priceless.
Also theSee Thru Pool is the best option for you if you want to go swimming and don’t want to walk too far. It is a beautiful swimming place with easy access to the water.
You can either use the rope to pull yourself out of the pool or simply swim over to the rocks towards the shallow end and walk out from there.
Although there are some submerged rocks that you may run over when swimming, the pool is lovely and deep.
Tahmoor Gorge
The hike through Tahmoor Gorge is breathtaking. You can’t imagine how many times you will have to stop just to take in the breathtaking views from inside the gorge and if we talk about the beauty of the beautiful swimming holes, it’s one of NSW’s best trails.
However, because much of the route is difficult, this is not a short 10km hike. You will hike the entire trail in 3 to 4 hours, including Mermaid and See-Thru Pool if you are a good hiker.
The complete Tahmoor Gorge Circuit follows the trail to Mermaid Pool and then takes you down into the gorge, which you’ll cross before climbing back out and connecting the track again to Mermaid Pool.
Summary
It is a great adventurous trip if you are adventurous and love to see the real beauty created by nature. But you always need to be careful as there have been a countless number of injuries recorded due to the lack of fatalities there. This is due to people risking their lives by rock jumping into the Tahmoor Gorge’s Mermaid Pools. But it is quite safe to visit if you avoid this type of activity.
