Watson Bay is one of the oldest fishing villages in the eastern suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is now one of the most beautiful and exciting places to visit for everyone as it sits on the sandy shoreline of one of Sydney’s most iconic harbor beaches.

Watsons Bay is a lovely area to relax and enjoy some of Sydney’s best attributes, with breathtaking views of Sydney Harbor and gorgeous sandy beaches. You can take a walk along the beautiful coastline or you can dine at Doyles of Watson Bay on the Beach which is one of Australia’s most renowned seafood restaurants.

Location

Watsons Bay, a charming harbourside enclave 11 kilometres north of the CBD, is a must-see. This luxury haven is located at the southernmost tip of the South Head Peninsula, near the entrance to Sydney Harbor, with only Vaucluse as a neighbour to the south. Watsons Bay is the essence of fantastic Sydney life, with its breathtaking views and lovely beaches.

History

In 1811, Governor Macquarie appointed Robert Watson (1756-1819) as Sydney’s harbor pilot and harbourmaster, and in 1816, he was named superintendent of the Macquarie Lighthouse on South Head. Watson was awarded land on the bay’s beachfront in 1801 and constructed his residence there. Cooti was its Aboriginal name.

Several buildings from the nineteenth century can be found in Watsons Bay. One of the most popular churches is St Peter’s Church on Old South Head Road. The southern coastline walk will also take you past the renowned shipwreck site of the full-rigged passenger ship The Dunbar in 1857.

Restaurants in Watson Bay

A variety of restaurants and cafes can be found in Watson’s Bay. Doyles on the Beach has long been a fine dining Sydney classic for fresh fish, lobsters, prawns, and more, with sweeping harbor views. Doyles on the Wharf sells fish and chips on the pier where Circular Quay ships come and depart for a casual meal.

If you’re going to Watsons Bay during the day, I recommend getting some great fresh seafood from Doyle’s on the Wharf and then sitting in the public seating area on the other side of the water.

Also there are a few takeaway coffee shops around, but Watsons Bay Tea Gardens Cafe serves simple breakfast, brunch, and lunch with an Italian flair.

Watson Bay Beaches

Watsons Bay is only a short drive from Bondi Beach, Sydney’s most famous beach. To experience the sights and sounds of Australia’s most popular beach, simply move south along Old South Head Road and then turn left into Military Road  which is now Campbell Parade.

Another famous beach in Watson Bay is Lady Jane Beach. This small stretch of sand at the extremity of the South Head peninsula is a no-clothing zone, but you can still wear clothes if you dare. It was the first nudist beach between South Head and Camp Cove. This little beach delivers a powerful punch with its amazing vistas and is great for individuals who love a relaxing dip and an all-over sun tan.

Hotels In Watson Bay

Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel is another inviting place for you . A lovely seaside facility with wonderful European style dining selections and popular for those looking for an afternoon cocktail is the place that draws the most attention. The affluent set who enjoy a summer drink or two frequent Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel, which has a lively scene on weekends.

Final Words

Watsons Bay is like visiting a magnificent beach resort with spectacular views of Sydney’s Central Business District. It is a great opportunity to enjoy your weekend in Sydney. So if you are planning a weekend outside with your loved ones then it is a must go place for you.
