Jackman was the youngest of five children when his mother abandoned the family when he was eight years old, and he and his siblings were mostly reared by their father. He later graduated from the prestigious Knox Grammar School. His parents were English immigrants who came to Australia as part of the “Ten Pound Poms” scheme in 1967. In addition to his Australian citizenship, Jackman holds British citizenship as a result of his parents’ birth in the United Kingdom.

Jackman completed the one-year “The Journey” course at the Actors’ Centre in Sydney after completing his BA.   In regards to pursuing acting as a full-time career. He loved being outside and spent a lot of time at the beach, camping, and on school holidays throughout Australia.

Jackman graduated from the University of Technology Sydney with a communications degree and a journalism major. He went on to study theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts after graduating and was promptly cast in the ABC-TV prison drama Correlli (1995), opposite his future wife Deborra-Lee Furness.

To pay for courses at the Actors Centre Australia, Jackman took on part-time jobs. Despite being given a part in the long-running television soap opera Neighbours, she turned it down. Jackman received a phone call giving him a position on Correlli on the night of his last Academy graduation performance.

Between 1995-1999 (Theatre)

Jackman was cast opposite his future wife Deborra-Lee Furness in the ABC-TV prison drama Correlli (1995). Following that, as an actor and a variety compere, he appeared in other TV guest roles. As Gaston in the Australian production of “Beauty and the Beast,” Jackman, a talented singer, has starred. In the Australian production of “Sunset Boulevard,” he played Joe Gillis. In 1998, he was cast as Curly in Trevor Nunn’s Oklahoma at the Royal National Theatre. He has two feature films to his credit, the second of which, Erskineville Kings (1999), earned him an Australian Film Institute Best Actor award in 1999.

Between 2000 – 2004 (X-Men)

Hugh Jackman is most known to popular audiences as the claw-wielding mutant Wolverine, a role he first played in the comic book turned big-screen success X-Men (2000). The picture ushered in a new era of superhero blockbusters, with Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and the rest of the cast returning for X2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand, respectively (2006).

 Between 2005 -2007 (Blockbusters)

With The Fountain (2006) and The Prestige (2006), as well as X-Men: The Last Stand (2007), Jackman returned to the big screen (2006). He finished the year with two animated films: Happy Feet, in which he portrayed Memphis, an emperor penguin, and Flushed Away, in which he voiced Roddy, a rat. Jackman became a patron of the Actors Centre Australia in 2007, where he studied, and he still is.

Between 2008 – 2011 (Sexiest Man Alive)

On Broadway, Jackman co-starred with Daniel Craig in a short engagement of the drama A Steady Rain, which played in 2009. Baz Luhrmann cast Jackman as the male lead in his much-publicized epic drama The Great Gatsby in 2008 and People Magazine awarded Jackman the “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2008 as well. Jackman starred in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and again in 2013’s The Wolverine.

Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre, which began performances on October 25, 2011, and ended on January 1, 2012, marked his comeback to Broadway. Jackman portrays a promoter in the futuristic world of robot boxing in the sports-action thriller Real Steel (2011). With a tremendously popular one-man concert presentation, he continued to thrill live audiences.

While starring in the long-awaited version of “Les Misérables” (2012) and as Blackbeard in the Peter Pan reworking “Pan” (2015) and P.T. Barnum in the musical drama “The Greatest Showman,” Jackman was a perfect fit to host the Tony Awards and the Academy Awards (2017). Jackman returned to Broadway in the new play The River, which ran from October 2014 to February 2015 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

In the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse, Jackman played Wolverine in an uncredited appearance. For the film, he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, his third Golden Globe nomination, as well as a Grammy nomination for Best Soundtrack Album.

Between  2019 – The Present (The Man, The Music, The Show)

In 2019, Jackman embarked on his first global tour, The Man. The Music. The show will feature songs from The Greatest Showman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack as well as Broadway and Hollywood musical numbers. In the comedy-drama Bad Education, he played a leading role (2019). He will play Harold Hill in a Broadway revival of The Music Man, which will begin previews in December 2021 and open in February 2022.
