Australia boasts excellent road networks and a railway system. The country takes pride in offering optimal pedestrian safety by providing a secure transport system. The transport department overseeing Victoria is VicRoads or the Roads Corporation of Victoria.

VicRoads Overview

VicRoads performs many functions central to managing the transport system in Victoria. The main head office is in Melbourne, and the regional offices are in Geelong, Bendigo, and Ballarat.

The department is responsible for vehicle registration, issuing licenses, and regulating road policies in Victoria. As of June 2018, the company had over 3000 employees.

History

On July 1, 2010, VicRoads was formed under the Transport Integration Act 2010, which focuses on creating a reliable and sustainable transport system. The Act envisions operating and maintaining an efficient road system that contributes toward creating a sustainable Victoria.

In April 2019, the announcement was made to merge VicRoads’ functions with those of Public Transport Victoria to establish the Department of Transport. Roads Corporation of Victoria earlier overlooked arterial road maintenance and bridge construction and ensured road safety. After July 2019, the functions were delegated to the Department of Transport.

Functions

The transport department mainly focuses on issuing licenses, providing vehicle registration, ensuring heavy vehicle compliance, and performing investigation functions.

License Issuance

Victorians can book their learners’ permits, driving tests, and hazards perception tests, renew their licenses and convert their overseas driver’s licenses. You must update your driver’s license if you have moved to Victoria from another state or country. You can only live without a driver’s license for up to six months.

Driving test applicants can also view their demerit points and order their driver history report. They may face ten penalty points if they drive without a license or an expired license. However, they may face up to sixty penalty points if they drove with an international or an interstate license.

Vehicle Registration

Vehicle owners can book a registration appointment online, pay their registration fees, and check their vehicle registration eligibility. Moreover, they can also buy or sell their vehicles. With VicRoads rego check, they can easily renew their vehicle registration.

If the owners fail to renew their vehicle’s registration within three months, their registration will automatically be canceled. They may also face a hefty fine of $925 on driving an unregistered car.

Traffic Alerts

The people of Victoria can check for any road disruptions in their area and plan their trips accordingly. They can also subscribe to daily road work alerts to be wary of the traffic conditions. Furthermore, they can inform VicRoads of urgent accidents or road hazards by calling on 131170.

myVicRoads

With myVicRoads, you can perform up to 25 transactions online without visiting the office in person. Sign up for the app on your laptop, tablet, or mobile phone and gain easy access to VicRoad’s services.

How to Register on the Site?

Users need VicRoads login to the site to access the services. They can either sign up as individual, partner, or business accounts. However, they must ensure the safety of their credentials and must not share them with others. Any system breach may lead to the termination of your and your partner’s accounts.

Corporate Social Responsibility

VicRoads takes corporate social responsibility very seriously and has taken many initiatives such as:

Support for Indigenous Communities

The Roads Corporation of Victoria has taken many initiatives to strengthen the aboriginal communities’ heritage.

Disability action plan

The organization’s Disability Action Plan, 2016-2020, makes it more accessible for people with physical impairments.

Social Procurement

Vicroads believes in having a social impact by creating jobs and employment opportunities for the people of Victoria.

Safety and Wellbeing Policies

VicRoads prioritizes the health and safety of its employees. It implements Occupational Health and Safety Policy to provide a secure work environment and a Return to Work Policy to uplift its employees.

In addition, the organization also emphasizes the Drug and Alcohol Policy to safeguard the health of its employees. Moreover, it also implements a First Aid Policy to provide immediate relief to employees and a Safe Driving Policy to provide safe travel to them.

That’s all about VicRoads and its services for customers and vehicle owners. If you like reading about business, history, technology, health, fitness, tourism, fashion, lifestyle, and more, keep visiting The Australia Time.

FAQs

Let’s see the answer to some of VicRoads’ most frequently asked questions.

How long can you leave your car unregistered Victoria?

Complaints regarding unregistered vehicle permits should be directed to VicRoads. The registration that has expired but has not been canceled allows the owner of the vehicle a grace period of three months. The vehicle owner can re-register the car after the registration expiry date.

What happens if your rego lapses?

You will not be able to drive your vehicle if your rego expires. You will need to renew it to take your vehicle out on the road. You might also have to face a fine; after 12 months, your vehicle registration will be canceled. So a VicRoads rego check is highly suggested.

Does VicRoads have an app?

The official app of VicRoads is VicTraffic. Using this app, you can view real-time traffic around Victoria. It also lets you see upcoming roadworks and events likely to affect your traveling.
